Cutesy Stuff has details on a recent dog food recall that has claimed at least one life. Here’s the kicker:
An Illinois-based maker of dog and cat food is voluntarily recalling one of its products that may have been contaminated with pentobarbital, a drug commonly used to put animals to sleep.
The recall involves 12-ounce cans of Evanger’s Hunk of Beef products with lot numbers that start with 1816E03HB, 1816E04HB, 1816E06HB, 1816E07HB, and 1816E13HB, and have an expiration date of June 2020.
Pentobarbital is also one of the main ingredients in the Lethal Injection cocktail used to execute people on death row!
Pentobarbital has a few medical uses in humans, but is often used by veterinarians to anesthetize or euthanize animals. It has also been used in physician-assisted suicide in Oregon and in Europe.
We’ve all heard horror stories like this before simply because pet food is all the crap left over at industrial ‘farms’ minced up and sold as ‘had-picked’ or ‘organic’ pet food.
The FDA has an excellent resource to keep up with pet food recalls in the USA.
If YOU wouldn’t eat it, then why the hell would you feed it to your companion animal? Many experts recommend cooking for your pet as you would for yourself.
Additionally, if you’re already vegan, or thinking about it, please consider the health benefits of a vegan diet for you pet. Here are some resources to get you started:
