Podcast – Josh Harper Interview on the Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC) Campaign

Solecast 38 is an in-depth interview with former animal liberation prisoner Josh Harper. Josh is one of the SHAC7, and he went to prison for his work against Huntington Life Sciences. Huntington Life Sciences at the time was one of the biggest companies doing tests on animals and was targeted for their usage of “live vivisection.” The tactics employed by the SHAC campaign were wide ranging and effective; they went after every link in the supply chain to bring this company to the verge of bankruptcy. Josh is currently living in the Pacific North West and helps run The Talon Conspiracy which is an online archive animal rights publication from the recent past.

Topics Discussed:

  • Josh’s involvement in the Stop Huntington Animal Cruelty campaign & animal liberation struggles
  • Lessons from SHAC for current struggles against Trump & fascism
  • The conflict between mass movement building & effective interventions
  • The approach, philosophy and tactics emplyed in the SHAC campaign
  • Some thoughts on the political moment we are in
  • Comical anecdotes about the Talon Conspiracy & him briefly being a suspect for the 9-11 attacks
  • Thoughts on being a political prisoner and how important support is, inside and out

Here is a bonus video of one of Josh’s talks:

Evil – Belgium’s Largest Slaughterhouse Expose!

Animal Rights is a foundation in the Netherlands, a non-profit organization (ASBL) in Belgium. The foundation was established in 2009 as a pressure group against animal testing.

1000_14

They recently went undercover for a month inside Belgium’s largest slaughterhouse. What they saw, and what the filmed, is shaking Belgium, and Europe, to it’s core:

How serious the consequences of not being able to stun becomes clear when the camera follows a pig throat cut along the automatic conveyor line. The animal is immersed fully conscious in the broeibad, a hot water bath which serves to facilitate removing hair from carcasses. The pig becomes detached from the pulley, trying desperately to get out of the steaming water, but dies a horrible death by drowning.

The footage of what is described above is absolutely gut-wrenching. As someone who has sat through hours of evil animal-abuse footage, including the infamous ‘Earthlings’, this may be one of the worst! I absolutely implore everyone, vegan or not, to watch and share this footage, and bear witness to what is happening at this slaughterhouse, along with slaughterhouses worldwide. Let’s work to end this insanity once and for all!

Please take a moment to sign the petition and help shut down this evil slaughterhouse. Please also consider a donation to their organization to assist then with their important work!

De Standaard has an article on the impact that the investigation is having:

Despite the legal requirement that animals must be anesthetized during slaughter, on the images repeatedly shown pigs hoisted conscious, are going to be killed and bled the animal rights organization continues. The gas chamber which is used in the slaughterhouse does not always work well. The law required to perform an additional anesthesia in such cases, but practice shows that this hardly happens.

Europe is known as having the strictest animal-welfare standards in the world. Keep that in mind when you watch the video and imagine what levels of evil exist in other parts of the world!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day? Ireland’s Fur Trade

NARA (National Animal Rights Association) is a voluntary, vegan, animal rights group based in Dublin, Ireland:

We have many ongoing campaigns, and are constantly out spreading awareness through our protests, demonstrations and information tables. Whether it’s a fur shop, a circus or a pharmaceutical company that funds vivisection – anywhere we find to be violating the rights of animals – we will be there.

NARA recently release the fantastic documentary, ‘Ireland’s Fur Trade’, for free on YouTube:

This is a documentary exploring the fur industry and trade in Ireland. Currently, there are three fur farms in the Republic housing roughly between 100,000-150,000 mink and there are at least dozens of shops selling real fur across the country. In 2010, the Irish gov’t pledged to ban fur farming but after the collapse of a Fianna Fáil-led coalition in 2011, Fine Gael scrapped the proposal and it’s back to square one. However, active efforts demanding both a ban on fur farming and to convince shops to remove the sale of fur continue.

NARAcampaigns.org is a highly-recommended reading, with highly detailed information on their various campaigns, global animal rights issues and local Irish vegan businesses.

Boycot Alert – Animal Abuse On Set of ‘A Dog’s Purpose’ Movie

UPDATE: please see end of article for an important update!

A Dog’s Purpose is a highly popular novel written in 2010, by W. Bruce Cameron, and is described as:

Heartwarming, insightful, and often laugh out loud funny, this book is not only the emotional and hilarious story of a dog’s many lives, but also a dog’s eye commentary on human relationships and the unbreakable bonds between man and man’s best friend. This story teaches us that love never dies, that our true friends are always with us, and that every creature on earth is born with a purpose.

dogbook

I haven’t read the book but as you can tell, it’s pro-dog and pro-animal. It may not be the animal rights bible of our time but does promote a healthy positivity towards our animal friends.

Fast-forward to present and we see reality bitch-slap us as always!

The Huffington Post reports on an undercover video of the blatant mistreatment of one of the dog’s featured in the upcoming film adaptation:

In a video obtained by TMZ and posted on Wednesday, a crew member or trainer for the film is seen forcing a German shepherd to perform a “stunt” that seems extremely unsafe ― so much so as to call into question how animals were handled over the entire course of the film’s shooting.

This is blatant animal abuse and the poor dog almost drowned! Of course, the Hollywood PR machine is kicking in and stating that this was a ‘one-off’ and no other ‘mistakes’ happened on set. If you believe that then you need to educate yourself more! Animal abuse in Hollywood continues to this day, despite the ‘feel-good’ end credit from the American Humane Association stating ‘no animals were harmed’. Animals are regularly harmed and exploited for entertainment purposes. Are you not entertained?

Here is an article on the problems with the American Humane Association:

Movie-goers who care about animals being used in films come away with a certain amount of comfort after reading American Humane Association’s famous slogan- “No animals were harmed” in the film credits. But after researching this organization, I have learned that their presence assures us of no such thing and in fact provides us with a false sense of comfort and a very different reality.

Additionally, PETA recently filed a complaint with the USDA regarding on-going animal abuse by Birds & Animals Unlimited, one of Hollywood’s leading facilities for animal training and handling. Guess which company supplied the animals for ‘A Dog’s Purpose’? Yup, BAU!

Well-done to PETA for being 2 steps ahead of everyone else as usual! Please consider donating to their cause, you’ll find it’s money well spent!

If animal abuse, and the video of the poor dog being forced into dangerous water and nearly drowning, is NOT your idea of fun, please boycott ‘A Dog’s Life’ and send Hollywood a clear message that this must end immediately!

Please also share the video and information on social media and let friends and family know of the horrific abuse. No one should attend this movie thinking it benefits animals in any real way.

And remember:

respect existence or expect resistance

UPDATE 1: for the sake of clarity, and the fact that we are only interested in the whole truth here at VATM, new information about this video has come to light:

TMZ now reports that the original video is an edit of 2 videos, taken days apart, and made to look like Hercules was thrown into the water. This is deceitful editing BUT even when you separate the 2 videos, it’s very clear that Hercules was manhandled, and nearly drowned.

The TMZ update requires you to believe the film producers version of events. That’s up to you.

UPDATE 2: Animal treatment questions cancel ‘A Dog’s Purpose’ premiere

UPDATE 3: TMZ reporting that film crew members under investigation, with jail time on the table. The on-set American Humane Association rep has been suspended.

Tampa, FL -‘Food Not Bombs’ activists arrested for feeding the homeless

CLTampa reports on the arrest of 7 Food Not Bombs members for feeding the homeless free meals, without a permit!

food_not_bombs_banner-5871a8dfb4b33

Food Not Bombs is a loose-knit group of independent collectives, serving free vegan and vegetarian food to others. Food Not Bombs’ ideology is that myriad corporate and government priorities are skewed to allow hunger to persist in the midst of abundance. To demonstrate this (and to reduce costs), a large amount of the food served by the group is surplus food from grocery stores, bakeries and markets that would otherwise go to waste. This group exhibits a form of franchise activism.

Food Not Bombs is gaining momentum throughout the world. There are hundreds of autonomous chapters sharing free vegetarian food with hungry people and protesting war and poverty. Food Not Bombs is not a charity. This energetic all volunteer grassroots movement is active throughout the Americas, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Australia. For over 30 years the movement has worked to end hunger and has supported actions to stop the globalization of the economy, restrictions to the movements of people, end exploitation and the destruction of the earth and its beings.

Take Action – Help Stop 2 Coyote Killing Contests on Federal Land

The ALDF need your help today to stop two massive coyote killing contests, one of which is scheduled for this Saturday. These two contests are set to take place in Wyoming, partially on federal property, and they don’t have the necessary permits for these killing sprees.

“Killing contests are simply blood sport,” says Animal Legal Defense Fund Executive Director Stephen Wells. “They are completely inconsistent with proper wildlife management, which recognizes coyotes as essential members of healthy ecosystems, not targets to be killed for ‘fun.’”

More information can be found here.

Please take a moment of your time to submit a message to the Bureau of Land Management here!
